Last month, I had the opportunity to photograph an annual charity 5-a-side football tournament organised by one of my clients. Although the event was described as a “friendly,” the atmosphere on the pitch told a different story. From the first whistle, it was clear the players were there to win—or at least to give it their best shot.
A Day of Determination and Teamwork
Football always has a way of bringing out people’s competitive side, and this was no exception. Players pushed themselves hard, chasing down every loose ball, sliding into tackles, and celebrating each goal as if it were the winner in a World Cup final. The intensity was balanced with plenty of laughter and camaraderie, making it clear that while the matches mattered, so did the cause behind them.
As a photographer, the challenge was capturing the moments that define a game. A defender leaping to block a shot, a striker lining up a perfect volley, or the goalkeeper stretching just far enough to tip the ball over the bar. These are the kinds of images that tell the story of a match and highlight the effort that everyone put in.
The ‘Friendly’ That Felt Competitive
Despite its label as a friendly tournament, it was anything but casual. Teams were shouting instructions, substitutions were made with precision timing, and the players left the pitch drenched in sweat after every game. But for all the effort and focus, there were plenty of lighter moments, too—cheers from the sidelines, banter between teams, and the occasional laugh at a slightly over-ambitious attempt at goal.
Football photography is all about timing. With the fast pace of 5-a-side, the action never stopped, and keeping up meant staying alert to every move.
Why Events Like This Matter
At the end of the day, this wasn’t just about football. It was about raising money for a great cause and bringing people together. My client had put a lot of work into organizing the event, and it paid off. From the teams on the pitch to the supporters cheering them on, everyone played their part in making it a success.
For me, it was a reminder of why I enjoy photographing these kinds of events. They’re real, unscripted, and full of moments worth preserving. Whether it’s the action on the pitch or the friendships off it, there’s always a story to tell.
